In reality the image of Mother and Child had nothing to do
with Christianity. The Middle East was awash with wayside
shrines of Isis and Horus at which travellers could offer devotion
long before Christianity saw the light of day. Even the colour which
many churches call 'Mary Blue' was Isis blue and the iconography
of the Egyptian Goddess was a godsend to early Christians who,
having little in the way of heritage, plagiarized the Goddess and child.
Thus they stole everything in sight - pagan sites on which to build churches,
pagan festival dates on which to graft Christian festivals, old folk songs
and dances to use as the basis of carols and some old Gods to
change into saints (e.g. St. Brandigore). Poor schmucks!
